The Magic of Mornings

What do you do before breakfast each morning?

In What The Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast, Laura Vanderkam found that the most successful people have already “scored daily victories that are advancing them toward the lives they want before the rest of the world is even waking up”.

Most of us know that if we wait until later in the day to do the things that really matter, and that can make a big difference in our lives, like exercise, reflection, thinking about how to advance our career or give our family our best, there’s a good chance we’ll never get to it.

The best intentions seem to lose their hold on us as the day moves on. Roy Baumeister, a professor of psychology at Florida State University, observes that “diets are broken in the evening, not the morning”.

We also tend to be more optimistic after a good night’s rest, and less prone to interruptions if we spend the early part of each day on projects and tasks that require large amounts of internal motivation.

Vanderkam suggests a five-step process for making sure that our mornings nurture our career, nurture our relationships and nurture ourselves.

1. Track Your Time so you can see the choices you’re making today, and the opportunities that exist to make the time for what’s really meaningful for you and others in your life.

2. Picture the Perfect Morning for you. If you were to make over your mornings, what would you do each day that you’re not doing presently? What would you do in the first 90 minutes after you wake up in the morning?

3. Think Through the Logistics so you can make your perfect mornings a reality. What will it take for you to accomplish what might have always seemed impossible?

4. Build the Habit by truly committing to your new ritual(s) even though you may be tempted in the first week or two to revert back to what has always been your morning routine.

5. Tune Up as Necessary as things change in your life.

The amazing thing about mornings is that they represent the opportunity of new beginnings on a daily basis. Choose how you spend your mornings wisely, and join the ranks of the most successful people on the planet.
